Upon arriving in the U.S. as a child from Chihuahua, Mexico, Cindy was raised in the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico and is proud to call herself a “Mexican-New Mexican.” Growing up undocumented, Cindy managed to surpass many political barriers, became a first generation HS and College graduate and went on to take unprecedented positions within education, immigration policy, and politics at a state and national level. Cindy set a historical precedent after becoming the first undocumented person to intern for a national political party in Washington, DC, and the first DACA recipient to work as a Majority Pool Analyst for the New Mexico House of Representatives. Cindy later went on to be rated as one of the "40 under 40s: Latinos in US Politics“ by the Huffington Post. Cindy has been featured on national and international media outlets such as; FOX News, Univision, The Washington Post, The NY Times, The International news agency EFE, and others.

As a former policy analyst, a non-profit executive and a political operative Cindy is known as an influencer and as a positive interrupter. Cindy utilizes the power of her lived experiences, struggles, and strengths to empower communities of color, youth, and leaders across the country through her work in the areas of policy, education, politics, leadership development, and advocacy. She is a policy advocate and believes in strengthening voices through civic engagement, education and holistic methods rooted in innovative and transformational leadership practices that guide the creation of conscious policy initiatives that support marginalized communities across the country. As a former DACA recipient, Cindy has focused on opening access for immigrants interested in policy and politics to begin a pathway of leadership development and training that creates opportunities for them to serve within those sectors.

Cindy is a motivational speaker and leadership trainer who works to empower communities of color through direct civic engagement strategies. Her passion for strengthening women’s voices in policy and politics has led to numerous leadership opportunities collaborating with EMERGE America, Ready to Run, as a TEDx speaker and as a member of the UndocuTalks Podcast. She serves on the board of numerous organizations and is a graduate of the Aspen Institute and the National Latino Center for Leadership Development Academy. Formerly, Cindy served as Executive Director of Learning Alliance New Mexico, and as Chief Administrative Officer at The United States Hispanic Leadership Institute in Chicago, Illinois.

Cindy went on to serve as Outreach Director for Congressman Ben Ray Lujan’s U.S. Senate Campaign, as Santa Fe Lead Liaison for the Assistant Speaker of the House: Congressman Ben Ray Lujan, and completed a winning U.S. Senate campaign cycle as Political Director of the Ben Ray Luján U.S. Senate campaign. Cindy served as Executive Director of Transform Education NM from 2021- 2022 and most recently obtained an unprecedented White House Presidential Appointment making her the first former DACA recipient in the U.S. to become a political appointee. Cindy currently serves as a national housing and education consultant and this past November 5th won the election to NM Senate District 9 as the Democratic candidate becoming the 1st Former DACA recipient in the United States to win elected office.

"Culturally Relevant ESL: A Formula for a tailored Approach for Real-World Success; The story of Empowering Muslim Women, and anyone else, through AI-Enhanced ESL Instruction” LIMITED
Saturday March 29, 2025 10:00am - 11:45am MDT
This presentation showcases a dynamic ESL program tailored to Muslim women speakers of Arabic, Dari, and Bengali, focusing on conversational and writing skills for real-world applications. By incorporating culturally relevant materials and fostering inclusive practices, this program not only equips learners with language proficiency for everyday life but also supports their career aspirations, and comfort in their new environments. The program leverages surveys to identify specific needs and wants and utilizes AI to uncover unique challenges faced by these learners. Materials are then tailored to address these needs in a culturally relevant and enjoyable way. Additionally, this formula for the class can be tailored to any age group, socioeconomic background, topic, or context, making it highly versatile. Participants will explore strategies for engaging diverse learners, building bridges between language learning, professional opportunities, and everyday life in a new setting while adapting this successful model for various contexts. This approach emphasizes communication, cultural understanding, and connections to real-world applications. Attendees will also leave with the formula used by the presenter, including a guide to using AI for creating scopes and sequences, surveys, language models, and exercises, as well as the outline of the presented ESL class and instructions on adapting it to various levels, contexts, cultures, linguistic challenges, and age groups that can be used as a model for their own classrooms and programs.

Critical Conversations about Social Media and GenAI in Education LIMITED
Saturday March 29, 2025 10:00am - 11:45am MDT
Introduction:
Before and during the recent COVID-19 pandemic, social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook emerged as dynamic online spaces, fostering community engagement and learning. Over the years I have explored the role of social media, with a particular focus on Twitter, as a tool for engagement, an exemplar of the affordances of social media, and a means for student-centered design of online courses in higher education.
However, as with all technology, social media is not without its challenges and over time, these platforms have increasingly been viewed as unsafe spaces, and both students and educators have become more hesitant to use them—particularly for academic purposes. This growing reluctance has raised questions about the value of social media in education, even as it remains deeply integrated into both personal and professional lives.
In parallel, the rise of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Bing, Gemini, GPT4all, llama 3, DeepSeek, Midjourney, Notebook LM, Lensa AI, and Canva Magic Write, just to name a few, introduces both new challenges and opportunities for education. These technologies cannot be ignored, and their impact on teaching and learning is already being felt across campuses.
I have been having critical conversations with my graduate students who are educators and designers across all contexts, and some colleagues addressing where we have been, where we are at, and where we are going as we navigate the protean, opaque, and unstable digital landscape (see #3 below for the article that describes this). Two focus areas I will share with you and draw upon for this presentation and conversation are 1) The critical need for the pedagogical approach of the pedagogy of love with a definition for the digital era, and 2) asking the questions - Is there still hope for social media and AI tools in education during these uncertain times? How can we navigate their complexities?
To address these questions, you can start with 2-3 readings as works for you:

In this workshop, participants will learn how to:
  • Conduct engaging read-alouds to increase students' vocabulary repertoire
