Using Reading Alouds to Teach Academic Spanish-English Cognates

Read-alouds play a crucial role in language and literacy development. Whether reading in English or Spanish or both,  you can help students make strong vocabulary connections between Spanish and English. Join us in exploring how Spanish-English cognates can bridge the curriculum for dual language learners, supporting their understanding of academic texts and their grasp of vocabulary and language structures.
In this workshop, participants will learn how to:
  • Conduct engaging read-alouds to increase students' vocabulary repertoire
  • Help students recognize and use cognates independently through an understanding of cognate morphology (prefixes, suffixes, root words, and spelling patterns)
  • Customize lessons to meet the needs of diverse learners
  • Plan content-area units that integrate cognates and foster language growth
